Zirconium alloys due to their good biocompatibility are a promising material for the manufacture of medical implants. However, the use of zirconium alloys for this purpose is limited because of their low strength as compared in particular with titanium alloys. Increasing the strength of zirconium alloys can afford to significantly expand their use in medicine. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) of zirconium alloys Zr-2.5% Nb and Zr-1% Nb-0.3% Fe-1.2% Sn by torsion under room-temperature hydrostatic pressure (HPT) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) leads to significant grain refinement of the structure and strengthening. ECAP also leads to an increase in fatigue strength of the material.
