Efficient industrial fast-neutron reactor power plants are amongst the primary tasks of the development priorities of Russian nuclear energy on the basis of closing the nuclear fuel cycle. Tightened specifications apply for the working conditions of the cores in such reactors (working temperatures of pin sheaths over 750°C with a level of accumulation of radiation damage over 180 dpa), which incorporate tightened specifications for safety and ecology applicable to existing plants, and it has become necessary to develop new constructional materials that should ensure their optimal performance in continuous operation. An analysis has been presented of the specifications and working conditions for fast-neutron reactors, which shows that one can satisfy the tightened working specifications with V-Ti-Cr alloys provided that they are protected from corrosion by coolants and the nuclear fuel by ferrite stainless steel.
