Metamaterials are artificial structures with very peculiar electromagnetic properties which do not exist in natural materials. Transmission of electromagnetic waves in metamaterials occurs at frequencies which are close to internal resonances of their individual structural elements, so-called meta-atoms. Due to energy losses, electromagnetic waves in metamaterials from conventional normal metals fade out very quickly. Our goal is to create a technology of superconducting metamaterials, which should permit transmitting microwaves with ultra-low loss. Superconducting metamaterials allow to make resonance frequency tunable by using Josephson effect – the phenomenon describing flow of superconducting current through a thin layer of dielectric that separates two superconductors. This current is called Josephson current, and structure of two superconductors separated by a barrier is called Josephson junction. We are developing novel electromagnetic metamaterials which will consist of superconducting meta-atoms with sizes ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several microns. Unlike metamaterials on the basis of the normal metals, the elements of superconducting metamaterials can be ultra-compact and still maintain negligible energy losses. The topology of superconducting thin films and circuits is very flexible, determined by modern thin-film technology and lithographic techniques. Such technology allows to create structural elements with nearly ideal topology and, what is especially important, to integrate into them Josephson tunnel junctions. These junctions have the unique ability to change their inductance under the influence of current or magnetic field, making possible tuning the frequency band of transmitted signals. Moreover, at ultra-low temperatures superconducting circuits show macroscopic quantum states, behaving to a large extent as artificial atoms. This gives an intriguing opportunity of studying quantum effects in metamaterials.
