NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF GEOMATERIALS STRUCTURE AND DETERMINING THEIR COMPLIANCE WITH QUALITY STANDARDS WITH THERMALLY STIMULATED ACOUSTIC EMISSION METHOD (TSAE)

Rock ware structure defects (especially cracks) impact greatly physical and mechanical and consequently and user and consumer properties. The value of geomaterials suitable for sculpture or architectural purposes and finally their market price, mainly depends on absence of such defects. General disadvantage of current structure diagnostics methods is lack of definiteness. They are reliably only to certain extent due to limited informational capacity and complicated interpretation. Besides, realization of most of these methods (applied to complex form samples – such as X-ray radiography) is only possible with advanced instrumental base. Thus the proposed TSAE method is quite appropriate due to its simplicity and low cost with experimentally proved definiteness of the results, and suitable for defect control of ornamental stone shipments as well as for investigating the condition of ornamental stone architectural constructions – for example during renovation works. The abovementioned method of material quality control for rock materials detects cracks and their location in relation to the center of the sample. The method works as follows: area located at equal distance between receiving transducers of acoustic emission, is heated to 90 °С. The transducers receive signals from the locally heated area. Interpretation of the signals allows to detect cracks and their location in relation to the heated area. It is experimentally proved that heating rock materials to temperatures below 100 °С does not impact physical and mechanical end user properties. Consequently the method can be considered as nondestructive. It also allows to detect maximum crushing strength.
