The European Union seeks to achieve by 2020 a 35%, and by 2030 a 45%, electricity production in the EU from renewable sources. This significant increase in renewable penetration creates a challenge within European power generation and its markets. Conventional power capacities such as natural gas power plants are necessary in times of large renewable penetration to balance the grid and offer back-up power capacity for days of low wind speeds and solar irradiation. Imports of natural gas are primarily from Russia with recent increases in the LNG imports. In this presentation using the ‘big data’ Enerpol software, quantitative scenarios of the changes in the future European electricity production mix in different European countries will be presented and the impact on the natural gas demand will be assessed.

 

EnerPol, a system-wide bottom-up integrated software tool to perform future based simulations of the geographically-indexed production, transmission and demand of electricity and gas on the scale of the entire continent. Using detailed physical, technical, demographics, regulatory, and financial data and models, future operation of the infrastructure, the needs for development, and economic impact are evaluated.
